Default Rel=Canonical

Having a bit of a problem with this.
Having never needed to use a canonical before - I read up on them as much as I could find.
However, taking a "template" from and online "how to " type website I put in my own page names etc,. Next days I checked with screaming frog and it had cure that issue or duplicate /similar page names.
Now the killer. I had to check some of the meta stuff and then I saw a new rel=canonical line - and not relating to the one I inserted on the home page.
I checked the server and they were there also - so it looked as if I had uploaded them. Been hacked I thought.
I asked a friend who works in IT if he had any ideas about being hacked or more likely getting a crap link in an email dropping in malware.
The answer I got back from the IT teams top developer was that under certain conditions...Dreamweaver will auto insert rel=canonical.
has anybody ever heard this before??
