Default Newbie - php signup form

Hi. I created a simple form in my template (as I want it to appear on every page) including just a name and email field. I used a form with a table within it and added a submit button and just used mailto: It all looks ok, but I read about the security concerns of doing this, and also wanted it emailing directly, and not just opening an email for someone to complete and send. I attempted to create a PHP file, but when I uploaded it, once the fields were completed and submitted, it jumped to the php page and just showed all of the raw code onscreen! What am I doing wrong? Any help and guidance as I am new to this would be fantastic! Thank you
