Default Viewport not quite right

Hi guys

I am baffled why I can not get a website to fit dead centre on an iPad or iPhone.

Have viewport with the width set to 1024. This works perfectly on other sites but on this one it's not working how it should.

Any ideas as its quite odd!! I don't want to have a sniffer or separate CSS

iphone is a safari browser isn't it? with hardware rendering of some [css?] features?
btw some things render really slowly, while some are fast. like text-shadow or whatever it was. that renders slow. google "ios rendering css3"
it seems to fit max width in my 640-width blackberry 9930.
I seem to have wanted to tackle the centering a div item before.
