Default Left column of table is too wide

I want to reduce the width of the left column of this giant table to 170px, but it is very stubborn and wants to stay at 200px. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Let me say--I know this code is a big mass of spaghetti, and no REAL coder would produce a Rube Goldberg contraption like this (anybody remember those Rube Goldberg cartoons? Wow, you're really old too!). But at least it works.

So thank you SO much for your help, and I would love to hear what you have to say.

The page is http://fieldguidetoquilts.com/0Front...thumbnail.html

The div & table code begins with:

<div class="contentwide">
<tr>
<td width="801"><table width="801" height="14480" border="0" align="left" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="5">
<tr>
<td height="42" colspan="2" valign="top"><table width="751" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="10">
<tr>
<th width="731" align="left" scope="row"><span class="bodytext">Click on a thumbnail below to go to the block's information page.
They're organized by section: <br />
Star, Cross, Square, Triangle, Bar/Rectangle, Curve/Faux Curve, Object/Other, and Block Shape.<br />
</span><span class="linklabelsmall"><br />
Thumbnails may appear more than once. The thumbnail colors are arbitrary. </span></th>
</tr>
</table></td>
</tr>

*This is the where the trouble starts*

<tr bgcolor="#a185bf">
<td height="42" colspan="2"><span class="BF1">Star</span></td>
</tr>
<tr align="left">
<td height="97" valign="top"><table width="170" border="0" align="right" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<th width="160" align="left" bgcolor="#a185bf" scope="row"><span class="BF1">&lt; 8 points</span></th>
</tr>
</table>
<br />
<br />
<table width="150" border="0" align="right" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr bgcolor="#36C">
<th align="right" bgcolor="#36C" scope="row"><span class="Whitetype">4 points</span></th>
</tr>
</table>
<br />
<table width="130" border="0" align="right" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<th align="right" bgcolor="#009900" scope="row"><span class="Whitetype">+ shape</span></th>
</tr>
</table></td>
<td width="586" valign="top"><span class="linklabel"><a href="../1Star/1Star7/1Star7C+ArkSnowFlake.html"><img src="ThumbnailArt/TFourPtsLAC306.jpg" width="65" height="65" border="0" align="top" /></a>

...and on and on pretty much into infinity

Again, thanks!

Webbedfeat , yes the code is spagetti Now, the bad part is that this is the problem :-/ There are too many errors for me to explain to you right now, but if you run your page through a validator, it will tell you about most of the errors.

incidentally your quilt images would hvae been far better - amd smaller - saved from the originals as 8-bit pngs (equivalent to gif) but i appreciate it's a bit late now

Thank you, Dave...guess I'll have to learn validator-speak. And to think I went to school to learn this! [lol joke]

Thanks for the tip about the PNG. There are already close to 500 images on that page with more to come, and just about anything I can do to make it load faster is good. It's easy enough to take the original .psd and resave it as .png. Tedious and boring, but easy.

Again, thanks!
