Default windows or linux?

If my computer is windows based does that mean I need a windows server? It runs in my mind that its a no, but would like some confirmation please. Also if I have the choice which is best to use. Currently i am looking at a company that is offering a much better deal if I use their linux server, should I be suspicious or is this normal?
Finally are sub-domains simply your website name and the specific page e.g. somesite.com/thisPage or have i got it wrong?

Go for Linux based hosting. Sub-domains are not individual pages but actual domains. For example you may want a mobile version of your site so you'd go for something like mobile.yourdomain.com.

linux (unix) hosting is more readily offered and is as a rule cheaper (i think that is still true anyway) better availability of php scripts (mail forms etc) and generally more support form forums
