Default List not displaying background for nav links

Having Problems getting the nav work. heres my code. the goal is that i have a image already made with the top half the default state. and the bottom half with a rollover image. now i know i haven't finished to display the rollover but im getting just the UL list with links displayed on my page. there isn't one picture showing up. and i referenced 6 different.

not sure what im doing wrong please help.

Are you sure your paths are okay?

Where do you have your stylesheet? Is it in a folder called css or something?

Your styles are not written correctly.

Your UL have as an ID of nav and the li's have classes. Your CSS selectors should look like

#nav li.next a {
/*some style*/
}
