Default For heaven's sake people, BACK UP! your sites.

Just a note to all of you who know better but still forget to back up sites and files. DO IT!

On the plus side, my hosting company does back up and the restore only cost me $15

Yep, I somehow lost or deleted half of a CSS file for a site that was almost ready to go live. Fortunately my host backs up weekly and I was able to get it restored in about a half hour. Of course I was freaking out for about an hour before I even thought about them being able to provide a backup.

A file version control system helps too. Check out SVN, CVS and GIT

Ouch... scary indeed. i do backup on a regular basis on an external hard-drive, but here in Greece we have power cuts on a regular basis too, so I'm not sure how long this hard-drive will last.
I do backup on my web-server (outside the public domain) as well... just in case

I was working on a couple similar sites at the same time. Ironically, I had about four backups of the other site. I really just wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. Add to that I was working on a testing site live on my host rather than locally and Stuff happens.

my personal low was moving servers , i uploaded an old version of a site and didnt notice for a few weeks and in the mean time had lost the correct version. that rising feeling of self loathing only went away when i forund a copy on a flash drive. i now keep 2 backups

Apple's Time Machine has saved my butt more times than I care to admit.
