Default white fringe when putting images in dreamweaver

I'm tryin desperately to remove the white fringe around a ribbon which i have created, when in photoshop the image doesnt have a fringe, however when i select save for web and devices it does have a white fringe so when i load it into dreamweaver the fringe is still there, I have tried removing white matte and defringing the ribbon but nothing works, the white fringe is still there, can anyone please help?

When saved for web and devices PS turns the image into a jpeg, which has no support for transparency. It fills in any gaps between the content and the edge of the image with white if unspecified.

Maybe use a PNG or a gif as they support transparency.

Moved to PS board as more appropriate.

Not sure I'd go that far but I can have the occasional moment of clarity

select bkgnd with magic wand,
select similar for all bkgnd,
then select > grow to grab a bit of the edge of the ribbon image
then inverse selection?
