Default 2000 lines of code on one page ?!

I loaded www.amazon.com, then clicked on view>>source in internet explorer. There are over 2000 lines of code.

That's crazy, right?

I studied some of the code, trying to figure out how they get so many boxes on the screen. As I suspected, it's a mixture of divs and tables.

But what I didn't expect was the amount of divs, and seeing divs inside of table cells. (unless I'm not reading the code correctly).

And www.staples.com clocks in at about 1300 lines of code. They use tables, but also seem to use the list item <li> tag a lot.

I agree. Both of these will be database driven stores where products details etc. will output as HTML. Both sites are very complex with lots of scripts and styles to make things work so I guess that over 2000 lines is about right.
