Unhappy FTP and dreamweaver problem

I am a basic website designer and most of my clients use godaddy.com as their host which makes it very easy for me entering their ftp info into dreamweaver when I begin working on their site ...

Every once in a while I get a client who already has a website and needs a redesign and every once in a while that client will be hosted somewhere else.

My latest client is hosted with network solutions and I am having the hardest time using the info he has given me to be able to get in to his site to begin the redesign.

He told me that he can get into the server himself using the ftp he has given to me and just going through internet explorer. Well that is all fine and good but I don't design via the backdoor like that so I'm wondering what step is missing when i put the exact same ftp info into my dreamweaver when I'm trying to set him up ...

I don't even know if I've made my question clear but it is hard for me to explain to him that just because he can get in via that way doesn't mean the info is correct that I need to get him set up via dreamweaver.

Is this making any sense at all? or am I a complete dork?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

When you try to connect using his info in DW what is the EXACT error message you get? Have you tried his info in a different ftp program?
