Default Width of Photoshop Layout

If I were going to make a website layout in Photoshop, should my width be 1024? I did that before, but i had to scroll over when i previewed the template in Dreamweaver. Thanks

- Ethan.

Depends who your audience is. Safe is 800px wide. I go up to 950 wide if I think viewers will be using nice big monitors (you must remember laptop users tho). The alternative is to make your layout % widths which alter with the screen size/resolution.

That's really hard to explain. You wouldn't make the Photoshop layout a % width but you could design website elements to work round a % width layout in Dreamweaver. As you are starting out, I'd go fixed width, probably 800px wide. Sorry if answer confused.
