Default Problem with viewing swf in browser preview

Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to help!

I'm very new to DW and building my site through trial and error! I wanted to make some of my flash objects link to other parts of my website but found out that they needed to be fla files rather than swf as I was unable to use the edit function. My friend gave me a 'decompliler' programme. Something happened and I was unable to view the flash objects in the preview browser. So (perhaps foolishly) I deleted the decompiler programme. DW will not let me view new swf files that I create nor jpegs of gifs. What have I done wrong? I also tried to do a CCS during this period, but it didn't work the way I wanted it to so have deleted that too. What have I done wrong!!!

Any help would be much appreciated.

K

If you don't have a good handle on regular web pages yet, I's stay away from Flash for now until you know more about what is going on.

Are you saying you can no longer add images to your web pages in Dreamweaver?

I can add them, it's when I preview the page in the browser - FF shows no image or swf and in IE i see the empty box with the red X in it.

If I were to not put in the flash, I know I wouldn't be happy with the final look of the site. Running before I can walk is one of my traits I'm afraid!

The red x means that the path to the image is wrong, check it.l

Thanks for the pointer.

For some reason, when I insert the image or swf file, DW doesn't enter the full path anymore - why is it no longer doing this (as it did so before)? The swf files work if I manually direct the src box to the swf above in the view pane but I can't do this on a rollover effect. I'm sure I've done something to upset DW!

It does not have to put in the full path. A relative path is good enough.
Check the path like I said. Is it right or wrong? You're not really giving any info here, so all I can say is that you should double check everything

The path seems right. I have noted below what I see in the propertiest panel. Apologies if I'm not making any sense - it's difficult to explain when you don't know the jargon!

When I insert a swf file, the file box in the properties area displays:

/Menu%20Bar.swf (flash image does not appear in browser)

If I then link the box to the swf using the little icon that looks like a clock, it then displays:

file:///C|/Users/Verity/Documents/Verity's Documents/Internet/My Webs/Lionsriver Bordeaux/Menu%20Bar.swf (now able to view in browser).

I'm sorry if my response is idiotic but unfortunately I'm learning from a book and trial and error.

Quick update:

Started it all from scratch! Deleted all previous files/pages/swf etc as I was unsure how to rectify the error shown above. I created a new, very basic index page and swf header - when inserted, it uses a relative path. Again it shows the red X error when previewed in IE or blank in FF. I could link each individual file but I image this will only cause me bigger headaches later if I don't sort it out. Ideas anyone?

Thanks.

I know you've sorted it but do you understand why it was wrong? (it will help for next time )

The path above is a path on YOUR computer - it will never work anywhere except your computer. You need to set your site up in "Site > New Site" to ensure your paths are correct.

If your files are set up:
mysite.com/
_________images
_________css
_________js . . . etc

Your paths would be <img src="../images/image.gif" />
"../" starts the path at the route of your site.
