Question "Web design etiquette" question re: redesigns

Hi All,

I'm in the process of putting my online portfolio together, and I have a question about redesigns. I've done a couple, and both clients thought the new design was a decided improvement over the old. I was thinking about displaying a still proof of the old designs for comparison purposes, but I wanted to make sure this isn't a violation of industry etiquette before doing so.

Please feel free to share thoughts, opinions, ideas, etc.

Thanks,
Sam

I don't see a problem with it. I wouldn't list the old designer or anything like that but a before and after seems fine to me.

I don't see an etiquette issue with this either.

Nope, agree with the lads. If you have done a better job then show it, just don't name the old designer.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys. I feel better knowing that I'm not breaking any "unwritten rules", and I would never use the other designers' names, so I think I should be good.

this happened to me just make sure that you reassure the old designer that theirs was not crap because they will feel really bad

I think you make a very good point here. The truth is that you don't know the circumstances under which the previous website was built. The customer may only have had a budget of $200 and they 'got what they paid for' and now they have a bigger budget for you to develop a better site. Or it could have been built a few years ago when web technology and design was not as advanced as it is now.

This has also happened to us and so the other view is that it is a sign to improve your skills. When it happens, use it as motivation or the 'kick in the butt' you need to become a better designer.

Good stuff, guys. I don't actually know either of the prior designers, and I think it's unlikely that they'll even know of my redesigns and/or portfolio. You make a good point, though - in both of these cases, I'd say I'm a better designer, but the prior designers were much better developers. Clearly an area where I can improve...
