Default Face shot image size

I've not used images of faces before in the general content of a web page. Is there a general rule that is used regarding the size these images should be. I'm talking physical size and not file size. Adjusting the images for physical and file size won't be a problem as I have the original images.

think it depends on the layout really

Thanks Ed,
The layout at present is a 780px wide, 3 column, with the main content being about 500px wide.

then it would depend on emphasis and purpose.
if it is a marketing exercise to promote a company Team, then providing they don't look like Godzilla then bigger may be better
if it is more of a reference to make the person known smaller would be ok as in a thumbnail.
if its a supermodel then big as you can get

Thanks,

With what you have mentioned I am thinking avatar size maybe a little bigger would be best. The images will be used for filler so there is more than just text and to show the age span of clients.

No supermodels, the wife doesn't like it when I post images of her on the web
