I have a client who wants his site optimized on Google.

Thanks!

There is no simple answer to this. Effective SEO requires several things.

Take a read of Davids SEO Blog
Might also consider his beginners book The SEO Hand Book.

This is so something I don't want to get into.
I don't understand what SEO companies do differently besides tagging photos with the website companie's name. I mean, they have to be doing something else besides that to justify 200-500 bucks a month.
And no, I haven't read that much about it.
I wonder if I can just sub this out to a company and remain the webmaster or do they have to be the webmaster and the SEO person.

Even if you choose to subcontract that part, you have to understand the basics of SEO, which you say yourself you don't have yet. Client will ask you questions, and you have to able to answer them somehow. You have to do a little research, get the basics down and you'll be able to chose a subcontractor easier.

Even 200-500/m can be on the low side. Companies with a well developed methodology that gives real results makes a ton of money.

So, in essence I need to research to learn how to say..nicely..
"I don't do that, but so and so does."
Alrighty then.
Again, really, all I need to know is if the SEO has to be the webmaster also, that gives me an out. I ain't doin that.
Or is it a combination effort between the webmaster and the SEO?

Build your sites in such a way that they are easily readable by search engines. Use correct tags etc. as well. Then if your client wants to engage in link exchange programmes etc. they can.

Hello

I chip my two pennies worth in, research, research research..... i am getting to understand it and i am starting to offer it as a service but only doing the basics at the moment. I am myself going to focus on this heavily as it is a big earner.
