Default a:link general question

I was having a problem getting an a:link in stylesheet to work properly in IE7 and found that if I used a, a:link rather than just a:link that it worked. Evidently this is just an IE issue because I didn't have a problem with Firefox. I only tried the a, a:link because I saw it in another stylesheet and thought I'd give it a try. Couldn't find any reference to it in any of my usual tips and tricks. Just wondered if someone knew of some guidelines on this rule.

I'm not sure what you've done there. I'venever had the need to add a, a:link...
Code:
<style type="text/css">
a:link {color: #FF0000}
a:visited {color: #00FF00}
a:hover {color: #FF00FF}
a:active {color: #0000FF}
</style>
This is all you should need.
have you checked it in FireBug? maybe you're having to over-ride some inherited style from somewhere?

Linkage ?
