Default Designers and Coders working together !?

So... I'm a one man band (not my full time job)...
I work for myself and I design / build my own sites...

I've worked for design companies - promotional / corporate design.
The market got swamped with 'Free Design' offers so I got a day job!

Anyway... I regularly get work offered that is beyond me. ie; the client wants a full cart & shop for their site. I know you can get bolt ons but If I was going to offer this as a service I would want to be able to debug it so ideally would want to code it.

Is it realistic to think that if I got a job that involved an in built cart that I could hire a coder to do the 'back end' work - I've never worked like this before. How do people normally agree terms etc...

Any advice appreciated.
Cheers
Rob

I would seriously look into outsourcing some parts of your project. You have a great problem, and you can use this 'problem' to take your business to the next step.
This way you'll be moving up the food chain a little, and you'll be spending some part of your time designing, and some part of your time managing (and some parts of your time receiving larger checks from your clients due to larger projects.)

How to find someone, and how to make it all work is a little beyond a mere post here. I'll do some searching today to see if I can find you some good info.

I'm not an expert by any means, but maybe try this site ... seems to have a lot of good coders on there and they bid for the job. After bidding closes, you don't have to proceed if you choose not to.

I have always managed to outsource jobs to other people if you cant handle it yourself. Try visiting a local business breakfast club, i found loads of useful contacts at mine

I would outsource what you don't know, but I always try to stay local - if there is anyone local. This way you can meet, get an idea of the person and work ethic and then proceed from there. Then if your business grows you'll be located close to the same area. Usually I ask what their project rate or hourly is. Then I decided on an average rate and terms regarding hours per project (if I go the hourly rate) and offer it to them. This has worked well for me.
