Question thoughts on page size?

a teacher told me that standard size for a website is 640x480, but i was wondering if any of you thought that it has changed to 1024x768. is it safe to say that most people have monitors that can handle that?

i am about to start a website that doesn't have a whole lot of information, but too much info for a 640x480 setup without scrolling. if i did in a 1024x768 i think i could pull it off without having to scroll. i'm a big fan of no scrolling if it's a small website with only a handfull of pages, but i don't want to alienate any viewers either. thoughts?

Designing for an 800px wide screen seems to be most common as it still works nicely for those with higher resolutions who don't fill their screens with their browsers.

Your teacher is definitely not current. It is some years ago since 640x480 mattered at all.
Do you have any access to your web statistics with monitor resolution?

Depending on your website audience my guess is that your 800x600 users is going to be between 6%-12% and your 640x480 users less than 0.5%.

Since websites is all about making information/applications accessible to other people, make sure you choose a resolution that is compatible with the most users of your website.

My situation is that I can design for 99% of my users (800x600) or for 90% of my users (1024x768 ). The choice that makes the most business sense is of course 800x600

There's plenty of opinions on this subject though, you also have the option of creating a fluid website that is not set to a specific width.

640x480 is standard for filming video - but even that is going away because of HD - Your teacher is either really old school or is getting video and web confused.
