Default No hand (link) pointer over my transparent GIF???

Summary:
I'm working in Dreamweaver 8 on a CSS/HTML design. The background images are displayed via my CSS style sheet. In the html file, I have the menu for my site composed of GIF images (substituted for text, because on this design I want to preserve the specific font).

Everything works, but the hand (link) pointer.

This is kind of weird to me, maybe I'm just missing something, but the entire image area works as a link, but only the non-transparent part of gif turns the cursor into the hand pointer.

As a result, you can click anywhere over the image to link, but you feel like you have to click the text as the cursor dances back and forth from arrow to hand. There has to be a solution for this.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Ben

See the link in my signature, it's really hard to work with non-existent code/pages.

Default Not much code to show...

<div id="menu">
<a href="index.html" target="_self"><img src="images/welcomemenu.gif" alt="Welcome" width="77" height="12"></a>

What is at issue, is that welcomemenu.gif is an image of text I am using as a link. For whatever reason the entire image (including the transparent area) works as a link (which is what I want). But only the opaque regions of the image, turn the cursor into the hand pointer, causing it to blink back and forth between the arrow and hand cursor. It would just distracting and confusing to users trying to click on the link.

No, URL yet, but I will post one as soon as I have it.

Code snippet is valid, see no problems there. Let me know when you got the full page up.
