Default jpg - gif

how do i convert a jpg to gif and make the background transparent?

open your jpg in photoshop and lift (cut) your foreground onto a transparent canvas then output as a gif

how do i do that in fireworks? I don't have photoshop, I have fireworks, and corel photo-paint.

Open the file in Fireworks and just save it as a GIF file.
Change the canvas color to black (Modify, Canvas Color)
Note this is the canvas color, if you need a transparent file then open the Properties window(Ctrl F3) put it to GIF and change transparency to index transparency. In FW 8 you can rebuild the color table there and make some color transparant, switch over to Preview mode to see the results! :P

going to charge in here with my first post and just say a couple of things!

firstly you should set the canvas colour to match the target canvas colour (i.e. the colour of the background on which you will be placing the gif) and choose that colour as index transparency in the EXPORT options - not "save as" in the above post - and then export as gif.
