Check out http://directmatchmedia.com/googles-...us-penalty.php for another take on this and Google's past announcements.

I used to read a lot of Blogs for SEO, And yes I smelled that smoke and now a lot of people being hitted as Google roll out a new algorithm 4 days back. Rand Fishkin already alerted a lot of people to avoid any penalty from overly optimized websites here a week ago.

I think it's a lot of bull

Unless you're abusing something, 'rel' attribute or other things, you're good. If you do normal stuff to make your web site and content better, and stop thinking about the search engines, you win. Matt Cutts et Co are trying to get rid of black hats and spam.

If you're a marketing/seo company (or any kind of web site), and you've used rel=canonical ALL OVER THE PLACE, in order to 'play' Google, then you lose. For the rest that might use it in breadcrumbs, they're good.

I've seen tons of sites where SEO folks have just gone overboard again and again. Don't get me wrong. I used to do this too.

I have breadcrumbs and I never even thought to use it. I just use ul-li's and it works for me. got the idea from o'reilly's css cookbook.
