Default Sitemap.xml

I keep seeing the importance of having a sitemap.xml document on your site, but I have a couple of questions

If for example I state in the sitemap.xml that my change freq is daily and I dont update ANY of the pages for 3mths, what are the implications, will this effect my rankings, how would google look at it.

And on the xml document do I have to state when I changed the pages. then re-upload, as I am sure I have seen somewhere that you shouldnt keep changing your xml document. Maybe Im wrong and maybe this is another stupid question but hay ho. Someone here may be able to shed light

Thanks for any help.

google told me that you could use a sitemap.xml, but if it contains too many links, they have no duty to use them all. limited resources being the reason why. discovered this on the google webmaster forums.

check out these links:

sure was enlightening...
