Hi all, two issues I would like to resolve with my website.

1. When I initially built the site the homepage was named index.html. When people search they are directed to the main page of the website itsamodthing.com
Apparently, I have duplicate webpages being the index.html and the itsamodthing.com

How is best to resolve this issue please? It's got me puzzled as I can't delete the index.html file because that is the file that I update which leads to the www.itsamodthing.com (http://www.itsamodthing.com) website.

2. I didn't realise that using the underscore in url's was not good practice and that hyphens should be used instead. How do I change the urls within my website, but keep backlinks etc.

I appreciate your help. Many thanks.

use a 301 redirect in .htaccess When Google sees a 301, it basically takes the SEO juice it had assigned to the first one, and moves it over to the second one.

Many thanks edbr for your time.

I set up an htaccess file with the following code:

RewriteEngine on

Redirect 301 /index.html http://www.itsamodthing.com

Once uploaded the website disappeared so I went back in and deleted the .htaccess file.

Any idea's? Thanks again.

the web will always open a page so its just to set the default page. im sure you will not be penealised for duplicate content
