View Full Version : mobile browsing speed over 3G, 4G?

I was planning on hosting a web page which loads a new 640x480 jpeg image
every 5-10 seconds. does anyone know how long it takes to load a 640x480 image over a 3G (would really like to know) or over 4G? I don't have a data plan on my phone so I can't find this out.
does anyone know the TCP net bitrates?
got it. 384kbps for 3G outdoors, 2Mbps 3G indoors (probably over wifi).

384kbps/8=48kB/s (that's not computer K,that's SI units k)

biggest of my 640x480 images is 157kB each at Q=80 (has no visual artifacts)
157143/48000=3.2738125 seconds to load on a good day.

so I am assuming I should load images at 10 seconds intervals so I don't overload the browser on the phone. as a side note, a page like that on a phone can be detrimental to the cap most cell companies place on wireless which is usually 2GB per month...

a 320x240 image would be more average size for most web sites, and it should take up 1/4 the space:157143/48000/4=0.818453125 seconds, more than enough time for the 3-second "blink" time for slideshow images my mother talks about (a marketing thing?).
