View Full Version : After Updating Template - Page breaks (extra copy of header menus, etc.)

Hi All,

This is my second question here. I'm fairly new to Dreamweaver and I think this is probably something simple that I'm just doing wrong.

I've built a site using templates. Up until a few days ago, I wasn't having any problems. I'd update the templates and all the child pages would update without issue. Over the past few days things have changed. Any new pages that I've created from templates, get screwed up when I update the templates. The old child pages still work properly.

What happens with the new child pages is that after I update the template, my new child pages display a second version of everything on the page, new header, menus etc.

I've been trying to trouble shoot this today and I just don't have the knowledge I need to fix it. I can tell by looking at the code that I have about twice as many lines of text as I did prior to updating the template.

I'd appreciate any input that anyone can provide. Thanks! G.O.

1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the divs. The elements within these divs have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.

2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward (for example: a right margin on a div set to float right). Many times, padding can be used instead. For divs where this rule must be broken, you should add a "display:inline" declaration to the div's rule to tame a bug where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.

3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar divs could be stacked if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.

4) If you prefer your nav on the right instead of the left, simply float these columns the opposite direction (all right instead of all left) and they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the divs around in the HTML source.

wow... This is very difficult to sort through...

Couple things to start with though to simplify things... Your CSS should be in its own file. Do you understand how to do that? That would get rid of a TON of complexity to your template pages... Second, I find a duplicate closing script tag at line 322. Is that coming from the problem itself or an error on your part? That sort of thing can cause weird things to happen, yet I've no clue if its a possible issue here. One thing for sure, cleaning this up will make it far easier to diagnose. I can't look at this code & immediately glean a causal agent...

this will give you problems when you go live also background-image: url(file:///C|/Users/Danny/Web Sites/whkn-NJ/images/background2.gif);

have a look at site definitions

Thanks for your reply John.

I'm not sure how to put the CSS in it's own file. But I will do research on it today and try to fix that up.

Do you mean an error on my part when I posted it here? If so, then I think it's coming from the problem itself. Thanks again for taking the time out to look at this.

Thanks for looking and responding, edbr. I will look into site definitions today to try and understand where I'm going wrong. Appreciate the help.
