Hello everyone new to the forum and very happy to have found you. I currently took over working on an existing website www.gettemeiers.com (http://www.gettemeiers.com/) I will be attaching screenshots if that’s allowed as well as the code.
Simply put the client wants me to change the CONTACT tab on the menu bar to QDBCALLENGE. I log into the server >httpdocs file>gett.dwt the screen shot is what comes up.

I click on the area of the contact tab with in the design view and change the name to QDBCHALLENGE within the code.

Save>Modify>Templates>Update Pages>entire site>

If instead of try to do the entire site and just files that use it shows no template or library items.

Here’s the code for the .dwt I’m working with.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
<title>Welcome to Gettemeier's Bar and Grill</title>
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
<link href="gett.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="head" --><!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
</head>

<body>
<div align="center"><div class="main">
<table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td height="208"><div class="header"><a href="index.html"><img width="320" height="120" border="0" src="images/blank.png" alt="Gettemeier's Home Page" title="Gettemeier's Home Page" /></a>
<div class="headernav"><a class="topnav" title="Gettemeier's Home Page" href="index.html">Home</a> <span class="topdivider">|</span> <a class="topnav" title="Gettemeier's Menu" href="menu.htm">Menu</a><span class="topdivider">|</span> <a class="topnav" title="Gettemeier's Events, Specials, Photo Gallery" href="events.htm">Events/Specials</a> <span class="topdivider">|</span> <a class="topnav" title="Comments from Gettemeier's Customers" href="/automonial">Comments</a><span class="topdivider">|</span> <a class="topnav" title="Gettemeier's Contact Info and Location" href="contact.htm">QDBChallenge</a></div>
<div class="dartboard" title="Gettemeier's Bar and Grill, Florissant MO"></div></div></td>
Thanks for any help I bet its something simple and im going to feel stupid and that’s ok I just need to get it fixed!
Thanks again,
Matt

To use the template to change pages on the site you'll need to first download the site to a local computer. Then edit and save the template. You'll be prompted to update the pages based upon the template. When you say yes, they should update.

Thanks for the reply. I have downloaded the site to my laptop. I tried making changes to the MENU page of the website with in the local view and i would have no luck. When I changed it to the the remote view and made changes and clicked save it worked. As you will notice all the pages except for the home page is .htm the index (Home) page is .html .

So when I work on the gett.dwt the template basically setting the header, nav bar, and footer for every page, should I work on that in the local view, remote view or am i just doing it all wrong?

Thanks again DWcourse for your reply I really want to figure this out.

Sorry but I really don't understand your questions.

The menu is controlled by the template. You won't be able to edit it in DW except within the template file (gett.dwt).

After editing the gett.dwt and saving it. DW should offer to update the pages built from that template. If you allow it. The pages should update.

Sorry for the confusion. When I log into the server within DW and the Gettemeiers site comes up, I click on the templates file select the gett.dwt. I change the name from CONTACT in the menu bar to QDBCHALLENGE and go to file save and it just shows connecting to gettemeiers and putting. It never offers to update the pages built from that template and the pages dont update.
Hope that makes more sense.

That's because you are editing the file off the server rather than locally. DW can't update files on the server from your template.

1. Download the whole site.
2. Open the local copy of the template
3. Edit and save the template
4. Allow DW to update you files locally
5. Upload the changed files.

I dont understand why this isnt working.

I have downloaded the entire site.
I am working on the gett.dwt in the local view in DW.

I have even went to the gett.dwt by C:>desktop>ghetto folder> httpdocs>templates>gett.dwt Opens in DW and again I make the same changes and again the same results nothing.

Since you recently took over the site, I'm wondering if you have the site definition set up correctly. Your local root folder should be the folder holding your website and your Templates folder should be directly in that folder (not a subfolder)

when i set the site up in dw I simply made an empty folder on the desktop and named it ghetto. while setingup in the advanced i pointed it to be the root folder and left the images folder empty. I then entered the ftp information given from the previous person. once everything was complete i went to my files drop down and selected the gettemeiers site and clicked on get to download the site.
I believe i did this all correctly. do you suggest deleting the site from dreamweaver and starting over?

When you log in to the server do you immediately see the site files or is there a folder on the server (httpdocs, public_html, www, etc.) that contains your site? If so, you have to include that folder in the host directory field of the remote info in the Advanced tab.

First thanks DWcourse for you insight. I talked to a friend who also uses DW and after describing what im dealing with and trying to do she seems to think that the original person who built the site has made the .dwt a read only and I wont be able to make changes. Is there anyway to at all to change this? The client wants me to make one change to the nav bar thats it.

The website is www.gettemeiers.com (http://www.gettemeiers.com)

I did notice that in the assests tab there is no templates shown.?

When I open the .dwt there is nothing (the images) in the header, nav bar, footer. Where there is pics they are the greyed out theres a broken image icons. The only thing your able to see is the editable region of the content.

Heres the code for .dwt,

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

After posting i went back in to DW and pasted the same code into a new blank page and I did notice that where I changed the nav bar content "contact" to "QDBchallenge" is correct.
">|</span> <a class="topnav" title="Gettemeier's Contact Info and Location" href="contact.htm">QBDCHALLENGE</a></div>

So i went back to the original .dwt I then hit the put button, dw did its thing for putting, check the site and no change.

I went back and looked at the pages posted on your website and they are not linked to any template so updating the template isn't going to affect any of those pages.

hmmmm? so is that to say that there is no parent page and child pages?
If so, then the person who built this site made the template then added a new page from that template along with the css for each page? That wouldnt make much sense would it.

Ok so taking into account the following, any suggestions to allow me to make the changes to the nav bar (its a non-editable region on everypage) that I have been trying to accomplish?

Wow again thanks, I been researching and browsing and trying different things for three days now.

Also, I also went back to our previous post and you had said:

When you log in to the server do you immediately see the site files or is there a folder on the server (httpdocs, public_html, www, etc.) that contains your site? If so, you have to include that folder in the host directory field of the remote info in the Advanced tab

I dont have anything in the host directory field. To be honest im not sure what to put in there.

Thanks again DWcourse I really do appreicate your help.

Sorry, my bad. I was looking at the source with a program that doesn't display the comments which is how the template is attached. They are indeed attached to a template.

I'm back to my earlier suggestion:

Since you recently took over the site, I'm wondering if you have the site definition set up correctly. Your local root folder should be the folder holding your website and your Templates folder should be directly in that folder (not a subfolder).

Also in the server setup you should have the server directory (or remote root folder) set up as /httpdocs/

Is there anyway to post screenshots?

I would love to show you exactly how its set up and hope that's is all it is.

Ahh got it thanks of course there to big of files to upload. Now I have bigger problems, while trying to figure this out I have messed up th menu.htm file of the website. If you go to www.gettemeiers.com (http://www.gettemeiers.com) it all looks good until you click on the menu tab in the nav bar. when it opens the menu.htm page the header, images, background, footer, and nav bar is gone. And if click on the nav bar where the tabs were it redirects to the .htm pages as normal but then nothing is found http404 not found. UGH!!!

Looks like you made that page by opening the template and choosing Save As…

That's not how you use templates.

I believe your right, Im getting aggrevated and made a stupid mistake now trying to figure out how to fix it. I have the correct menu.htm but again when I push put its not uploading.
