I am now trying to sort out some keywords for my site and I have found another google tools: adwords.google.co.uk

Now I can see how it can be useful. But what I was expecting was word alternatives eg if I types in "tutorial" i thought I would get "lesson, lessons, course, courses, tut, tuts" etc

How do I get useful word alternatives?

Adwords is paid for (pay-per-click) Google advertising. I'm confused why you think it should get word alternatives? If you sign up (and pay for) an account then it does suggest alternatives after a while.

I assume tony is referring to the Adwords Keyword Tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal which is very useful for researching keywords. It can suggest terms based upon keywords or a url.

Another useful tool is SEObook's keyword suggestion tool at http://tools.seobook.com/ (although it doesn't really do what he's after either).

I am not that savvy with keywords as my first experience with it has been anything but useful. I tried ti employ different algorithms and none seem to work. I even tried keyword stuffing, which I know is not ethical to do. I am sure that that worked to be a disadvantage and not provide help at all. There are a lot of aspects to consider with it. Keyword density even.
