Hi I have just finished developing a site and have uploaded to a fresh webspace. When we do a google search on the domain name a whole list of old defunct web pages comes up under the new index page. Even one of them was a folder I used for testing on the old server. I have created a sitemap but how do I get rid of these old listings?

Thanks

You can either request to have them removed through webmaster tools (google account) or just wait for them to drop off.

Do I use a robots.txt file?

Webmaster Tools > Your site > Site Configuration (on the left) > Crawler Access (gives you three tabs in the middle of the page) Click on the tab marked 'remove URL' and submit addresses.

Robots.txt is a fantastic way of controlling what is and isn't indexed. Well worth getting your head around :)

With the removing of the urls, do you know if I have a page on the new webspace named faq.html and one of the web crawl errors not found is faqs.html, it wont remove my faq.html will it?

Nope, just the exact URL you specify.
