View Full Version : Updating Fireworks HTML Image In Dreamweaver

Is there a way to update an HTML image that has been placed into a Dreamweaver html page?

I created a header with links in Fireworks, placed it in Dreamweaver (CS3) by using "Insert", "Image Objects", "Fireworks HTML" and have needed to update the graphics and links on several occasions. I always have to take out the whole Fireworks HTML graphic and replace it with the new one. There just has to be a faster better way to update the graphics and links.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

what exactly is an 'html graphic'? do you mean an image drawn in fireworks, or are you talking about a wireframe web page designed in fireworks that you are exporting as HTML+png's+css to dw?

if you want to know more about how to do that, look it up on http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2008-design/designing-a-website-in-fireworks-cs4-by-paul-dorian/

and in it are the following links:

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatly I am a real newbe to both Fireworks and Dreamweaver. I do know that I create a header (graphic) in Fireworks with links and then click on File-Export-and set the export to HTML and Images with export slices putting the images into a directory called images. Then when I go to Dreamweaver and I click Insert-Image Objects-Fireworks HTML I get the graphic in my web page and the buttons work.

I do not believe the issue is a Fireworks issue. I have no problem updating the Fireworks graphic. The updating difficulty comes in when I to update Dreamweaver. I have to remove the old graphic and then insert the new one. I am just looking for an easier way to update the graphic in Dreamweaver after I update it in Fireworks; something automatic instead of opening every one of my web pages, removing the graphic and then replacing it with the updated one.

Two choices; http://www.dreamweaverclub.com/dreamweaver-templates.php or http://www.dreamweaverclub.com/php-includes.php

Each gives you a base file that you can edit and have it update all pages. Hope that helps.

I should have mentioned that you can export whole site designs into dreamweaver to "flesh out", which fw having a master page (template), and shared content as well between other pages.

you might consider using a smart object for your case. this sounds more appropriate now that I have re-reviewed your question.

I won't know if this works with fireworks files, but I know smart objects work with photoshop psd's.

oops. I just noticed your later post. yeah, you want a dreamweaver template. a .dwt file in your /templates/ directory under your site source files' root dir.

you can make one yourself with notepad++. dw kind of gets locked in when you start editing certain parts of a .dwt file or a file that has been created form a template. once it has been done with a template, in CS5, you can choose to "update all pages that use this template" if you change the template.

I have several sample templates in my php site management stuff for download at http://JesusnJim.com/code/php/menu.html

you can take an existing doc and choose File, Save As, Template.
you can then optionally create editable regions.
once you have "editable regions" the only way you can modify them is through notepad++ or (ugh) notepad.
