Afternoon all

I know from reading that multiple pages can be updated using templates, the problem i've got is that i didn't make a template to beging with

What i've done is, i've created a new page in the navigation links down the left hand side of my site and updated the 15 or so pages with the new page,

The problem i have is that there are another 1000 odd pages that also need updating with the new link

So, the queston i'm asking is, is there any way i can update the other 1000 odd pages without having to go through each one adding in the new link?

Here is my site folks http://www.merseyme.co.uk/

The new page i've added to the nav menu on the left is called projector hire, the other 1000 odd page are buried in the 'music we specialise in' if you click on that link it still shows the old navigation menu

I hope all this makes sense, i've tried top explain it the best i can

Thanks for any help offered chaps, as always it's much appreciated

Find and replace maybe? And then think really hard about using templates or includes and just having to do the job once.

Dude, whilst you are there (and spending the time) you might wanna look at all the spaces you have in your URLs. For instance;

http://www.merseyme.co.uk/gallery/Jamie%20Carraghers%2030th%20Party/jamiecarragher.html

Should be more like;

http://www.merseyme.co.uk/gallery/Jamie_Carraghers_30th_Party/jamiecarragher.html

I can't tell you what to replace with what as not clear what you are after. But, yes, the principal is correct. Replace one set of menu code with the new one. For Christ's sake TAKE A FULL BACK UP before doing anything!!!

What I meant by your URLs is that you must have folders with spaces in the names such as the one with Jamie's birthday images in. It's always best practice to use underscores or hyphens to split words when naming pages or folders or you get that nasty %20 in the middle. Just an observation.

In all honesty (and back to find and replace) you might want to put the new menu in an include file (see tutorial on this site) and replace the menu code with something like;

<?php include("includes/menu.php"); ?>

To save you having to do this again. Do some reading around it first though :)

Good luck (and sorry about Homer... couldn't resist)

Cheers corrosive, php includes does sound like the way to go, however it'll be taking me out of my comfort zone if you know what i mean? it's definitely on my 'things to learn about web design' list though, along with 1,000,000 other things.

Ha ha no worries about Homer, i love the simpsons anyway

With regards as to what i'm trying to do, it's basically change the nav menu from the old one (without the projector hire link) to the new one (with the projector hire link)

So you think if i copy the old nav menu, find & replace it with the new one, it will replace the old code with the new code?

Corrosive

OK, yeah. The one thing concerning me is that your file paths are very different between one and the other. Watch that before you start but you are on the right track.

Can I just say TAKE A BACK UP again? ;)

Hmmm, i can't get it to work properly

Any ideas of what to find and treplace Corrosive?

I've tried to find and replace the whole nav menu, and then i tried to find and replace just the one line of code

It seemed to work at first but then when i clicked on the links back to the projector hire, it came back as cannot find

Here's what i done...

Find in: Current local site
search: source code
Find: <li><a href="../../quiz_nights.html" title="Quiz Nights">Quiz Nights</a></li>
Replace: <li><a href="projectorhire.html" title="Projector & Screen Hire">Projector & Screen Hire</a></li>

What i've done is changed the content of what was formerly the quiznights.html page, reworded and retitled the page to projectorhire.html

Merci

If you're files are in different folders (they are) and you used relative links (you did) the actual code for the link will vary depending upon which folder the file you're updating is in. So you might need multiple find and replace actions.

Back again chaps

I'm stumped with this one folks, can anyone tell me what text i need to replace and what i replace it with

I'm basically trying to get the nav menu down the left hand side of my site to replace where it says 'quiz nights' with 'projector hire'

what i've done is edited the quiz nights page, changed its name to projector hire, then done a find and replace in the source code for quiz nights to be replaced with projector hire

gentleone

The reaon why it's not replace with your new link is because those music pages are 2 levels down hence twice the double dots slash

<li><a href="../../quiz_nights.html" title="Quiz Nights">Quiz Nights</a></li>

So you'll have to do a find and replace for them as well.

Find:
<li><a href="../../quiz_nights.html (http://www.dreamweaverclub.com/forum/view-source:http://www.merseyme.co.uk/quiz_nights.html)" title="Quiz Nights">Quiz Nights</a></li>

Replace with:
<li><a href="../../projectorhire.html (http://www.dreamweaverclub.com/forum/view-source:http://www.merseyme.co.uk/projectorhire.html)" title="Projector & Screen Hire">Projector & Screen Hire</a></li>

Thanks Gentleone that worked brilliantly

All i had to do then was change the 15 or so odd nav links to 'projector hire' instead of 'quiz nights' and that was it

Thanks also to Corrosive for your input

I wish there was some ways i could repay you guys, i really do

Touched down in foggy Bristol this morning. Thought we were still coming down through the clouds and then we hit the tarmac! Couldn't see hand in front of face when we got off the plane...

Welcome back to Blighty! LOL.

Tell you what, DW Club Xmas party. We pay full whack for the disco but you cover the air fares. So, that's domestic flights for me, DJ and Rob and then Ed from Bali, gentleone from Rhodes, JC and Ove from the States and dave from Finland. I've probably missed a few who would like to come so maybe start a thread asking where folks would like to fly from. We'll all descend on John Lennon Airport... I am joking of course ;)

It is romoured that karaoke is an old Balinese word meaning " Divorce please" but im sure its not true
