I want this kind of top portion:

but my prob is that i can't hide the space between successive list items.

how to do this without using float ???

If you're using an unordered list as the basis for your list I think using a float is the only way.

You could arrange a few divs or links (display: block) side by side making sure to set 0 margins and making sure there are no spaces in the code between them (although it shouldn't matter sometimes it does for some browsers).

I agree with DWCourse. Display inline has a similar effect when it comes to displaying a list horizontally but because you need it to display block for the background images you're better off sticking with the float.
