I started a site with the css defined on each page and I now know how to do things the right way but I'm not sure the best way to get the css from the current pages onto an external css document.

Any suggestions?

In Dreamweaver's Style palette select the style rule(s) you want to move and then select Move CSS Rules… from the Style palette's popup contextual menu (it's the little menu icon in the top right corner of the palette).

Or, highlight styles, Ctrl C and Ctrl V into a stylesheet document. Then link the stylesheet into your pages.

Whit this way, don't copy the 'style type' definition to your stylesheet too.

<style type="text/css">
<!--
Only copy your styles that are here to an extarnal stylesheet!!!
-->
</style>

It's a common mistake... I see it quite often when people ask why their styles are gone all of a sudden ;)
