You apply styles to tags using CSS. Example;

CSS

table {background-color: #fff;}

HTML

<table>All of your table backgrounds will be white</table>

You can also target just table headers using the th tag or table cells using the td tag. These can all be styles in the same way.

If you want to target a particular cell or row within a table then give it a class. Example;

CSS

.target {background-color: #fff;}

HTML

<table>
<tr>
<td>This cell is default</td>
<td class="target">This cell is white</td>
<td>This cell is default</td>
</tr>
</table>

Background images can be added in the same way.

Hope this helps.

By the way, only use tables for tabular data. Don't use them to lay your page out.
