Centring content is pretty simple;

I'm not sure what you mean by the rest. You can use PNG images to get transparency but you'll need a 'fix' for IE6

I do understand and you are trying to use CSS properties that aren't supported by IE6. Position: fixed...not supported, opacity...not supported. You may need to create an IE6 specific stylesheet and make some compromises in your design.

Try using an ID;

CSS

#wrapper {
width: 770px;
text-align: left;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
position: relative;
}

HTML

<div id="wrapper">
<div id="txt">
<p>n a h a n</p>
<a href="history.html" title="about" class="holder" id="abt">About</a>
<a href="facts.html" title="facts & figures" class="holder" id="fcts" >Facts & Figures</a>
<a href="poi.html" title="Nearby Places" id="poi" class="holder" >Nearby Places</a>
<a href="#" title="forum" class="holder" id="form" >Forum</a>
<a href="gallery.html" title="gallery" id="glry" class="holder">Gallery</a></div><!--txt-->
</div><!--wrapper-->

Let us know if it still isn't working once you've made those changes. It does look like you have done it all correctly.

In your CSS there is a 'space' error!
div .wrapper {
should be:
div.wrapper {
