What would be the best way to create a two or three column dot point list?

I have had a look at some tutorials that show the use of ul + li> and wonder if this is better than just creating with css using the float method?

ul and ol were invented to list content, so this is the only way to go. They're screenreader and search engine friendly and of course you can style them whatever you like.

i have a css drop down menu that us made up of ul.

When i create my new three column layout using this method, my menu seems to take o these attributes for some reason? They are saved as different style sheets - but attached to the same pg

So you need to make sure that the CSS you want to be applied to only one list, only gets applied to one list
This can be done a number of ways, for example using an ID attribute on your menu UL.
