View Full Version : Local PHP/MySQL testing environment

I'm looking to understand building online Forms and validating their input. In "The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS4..." it suggested to install XAMPP for Windows (via ApacheFriends.org) to install a PHP/MySQL testing environment on my local computer. After having done this I attempt to test a simple example to see how Spry and Forms transfers data from a client-side page onto a new page (via the server testing environment). However, what happens is that once a new page loads it either displays "Error 404" or, more often, "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page." Mind you, the Apache server (with MySQL and FileZilla FTP) is turned on. Anyone with knowledge of these things?

open a browser and type http://localhost if the serveris ok you will open the index page, xxamp has some kind of landing page from first installation i believe. if so i suspect it is asite definition problem , try that fitrst and post back

Thanks edbr. Here's what happens:

I get to XAMPP for Windows webpage, and it indicates:
"Welcome to XAMPP for Windows Version 1.7.1 !

Congratulations: You have successfully installed XAMPP on this system! Now you can start using Apache and Co. You should first try »Status« on the left navigation to make sure everything works fine.
..."

Then, I check 'Status' and MySQL, PHP, HTTPS, CGI, and SSI are "activated," only SMTP and FTP Services are "deactivated."

Then, with the XAMPP Control Panel, I start modules Apache and MySQL, leaving FileZilla off.

I load my file ("feedback.php" under folder /ch09) in Dreamweaver, and select Preview on Internet Explorer. Two windows appear one after the other. The first is "Update Copy on Testing Server?" I click Yes.The second is "Dependent Files?" The default is "No".

If I click "No" then a webpage attempts to open with "http://localhost/ch09/feedback.php" in the search window, and it never loads completely--just a white page appears.

If I click "Yes" then a webpage opens but indicates the following: "Object not found! ... Error 404, localhost, today's date/time stamp, Apache..."

Your thoughts?

in your site definitions you have saved a folder in the public_html folder( i think that what xxamp calls local host)? and 'put' your files? if so i cant be sure why its doing that as apache is obviously configured so i dont think its a problem with that
