View Full Version : Can Anyone help a complete newbie with these strange symbols

08-05-2009, 12:08 AM

I have this text symbol show up when browsing certain websites and when I tried to start writing in Dreamweaver. It shows up in my browser preview fine, but I can't see what's written when I am editing in dreamweaver.

Can anyone help me? I am completely lost and trying to learn about this stuff.

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know what that is? That is a spry menu and "hello" above it, but its in that code which I cannot get rid of! If anyone knows, please give me a heads up. Thanks

Not a clue, looks like some sort of dingbat font.

If you see this in your browser when browsing websites, I'd say it's a system problem. I'd stray a full shutdown of the computer and restart and then look into your system settings (are you PC or Mac?).

If it's only in Dreamweaver, then it's a Dreamwever problem and I'd start quitting and restarting Dreamweaver and the rebuild Dreamweaver's preferences (http://dwcourse.com/dreamweaver/rebuilding-preferences.php).

Beyond that, I don't have any ideas.

EDIT: Can you show us what your code view looks like?

It happens in Safari on occasion, but if I get a browser preview out of dreamweaver, it shows up with the correct text and font. How strange..

AH, thats freggin weird. I installed fontexplorer pro, could that have f'ed my fonts up? Anyone have a suggestion?

its the default text in dreamweaver that is causing the problem. When I right click on the viking text and change the font from the default, it fixes my problem. But, what is the default font? Maybe I should reinstall it or find it somehow and install it?

In that case go into Preferences under the font category and set the Proportioonal Font to Times New Roman (or whatever you prefer although it affects only dreamweaver).

wow, thats it! It is Times New Roman.....that is the font that is causing the problems. Anything that is Times new Roman turns into Viking font. WTF. Thanks for all your help DW and Domedia. Now what..

Ok, I fixed it by deactivating that font in fontexplorer. viola now it works fine. Thanks again folks

Hi, yes I know what these symbols are and what they mean. It's a while since I have seen them which makes their appearance on a computer screen all the more interesting.

They are part of a text found in a tomb from the first intermediate period of Ancient Egypt. So about 4,500 old !! They represent part of the path that the dead king's soul must traverse in order to reach immortality as a God in the afterlife.

It is a very sacred text so do treat it with great respect. Study it well, and you too may be able to acheive immortality.

I hope this is helpful.

Hi Neil and welcome to the forums!

The viking rune alphabet is called Futhark. Not really connected to ancient Egypt at all, but equally interesting :)
