I'm notice a few sites have the blow tags added in the head of their html, are they important?

<meta name="robots" content="ALL" />
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow" />
<meta name="re-visit " content="7 days" />
<meta name="distribution" CONTENT="Global" />
<meta name="document-rating" content="General" />

DWcourse, I've read through the above link and from what I can see, I don't need any of those meta's.

If I do decide to leave them in, is there any chance this might cause the site to rank lower?

Also to the best of my ability, I've followed googles instruction on how to try rank high with Google. What I'd like to know is if there are any sites or forums you can suggest that I can brush over some additional information regarding SEO?

That's my understanding as well. I'm no expert but I learned what I know about SEO from the folks at the SEOrefugee, SEO forumů (http://www.seorefugee.com/forums/) There are a lot of other bigger forums out there as well. Don't rely on one person's answers as nobody has all of them in the SEO field.

Matt Cutts is basically Googles voice to the SEO community, so you might be also be interested in his blog: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/type/googleseo/ (IMHO, the comments are often the best part as they come from some of the top folks in the industry)
