I've inserted a nice fade in/out header using cs3 which works great however I'd like to show users without flash, a static jpeg header with maybe a link to adobe. Even some text would be useful as at the moment the space is just blank n FF and red crossed in IE.

I've been reading that swfobject2 is the way to go for embedding flash as it works well for detection and non flash browsers, I don't know much about it and CS3 worked so well I'd prefer to keep that code I think. What's your experiences and advice for alternate content for flash?

I think I've used a regular background. That way when the flash is not showing up, the background will.

You don't even need to use flash for this...
You can just go to Behaviors and add a Behavior and goto Effects and click on Fade In/Appear, I think....
So all of your users could few the fade in effect...
