hi, ive been doing photoshop/css/html for a while and have a collection of newbie portfolio sites here

and i compare them to the site examples here

and my sites look bad. i was wondering , should i work more on developing
my photoshop skills? a lot of images i can get from http://www.sxc.hu/index.html
and manipulate them in photoshop for my designs. but i dont know where exactly or what to do from here. my designs are very newbieish. any help or specific directions greatly appreciated. thank you . derek
edit: are there any sites dedicated to improving photoshop skills specific to web design backgrounds? and art specific to web design? take this for example http://friml.com/ i have no idea how the web designer came up with the text and art for it.

its a question of personal taste and experience isnt it? find what you like and try to do the best you can i would say. not everyone likes the same fortunately. so you wont please everyone, I dont in think your example, the text is great but thats just my opinion

I don't think you're lacking technical Photoshop skills per se.
It might be that the web medium is new to you and you just need more experience. My designs looks bad compared to the ones at CSS Zengarden as well 8)

you can teach anyone to code but you cant teach design. Well thats not entirely true but what i mean is that great design is a gift you are born with. Yes you can teach the 'rules of thumb' but its not a skill which can be passed on. If you are not an artist then its fine. Take a look around the net and see what the arty types are doing and use examples and techniques for inspiration.

I think, if anything, your designs are a little too complex. You certainly know your way round Photoshop but clean and clear with flourishes of design are better IMO.

The 'Angels' site, for instance, where you have the clouds in the background looks great for a static piece of art but it doesn't translate all that well to a web design.

Be thinking about how you will build it as you design.

I quite often have to limit myself in what I want to do just so that a site will expand correctly when users increase text size. Even think about what you would do if you had to add another paragraph or an image and you've designed a box for content which is one size only due to the backgrounds you have used.

Knowledge of websites, CSS and design should all sit happily together and I don't think you are quite there yet. A build should almost fall into place and I feel you are struggling to piece your designs together where you shouldn't be.

Don't give up! You are nearly there. :)

thank you very much everyone for that great positive feedback, i feel a lot better about myself. i was pretty down. i will work harder at looking at other great designs and improve my css /photoshop skills. i think the biggest thing i have to do is do a LOT of looking at other sites css and photoshop applications on their site. thank you VERY much for that feedback everyone, and domedia. derek:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

ive just spent like an hour and a half there and already im learning. i write down similarities in sites and similarities within a site, for navs, headers, logos, background, and text. for trends and similarities. thanks. derek

one trend is blue for a corporate color, and modern looking organic rounded logos. and wire mesh globes or grids in perspective in the background.

just be all 'spong like' and soak up all the design queues and ideas
