Hello all

I am new here, just joined today.

Can any one help me with this please?

I have Dreamweaver4. In the view mode it will not let me switch to code or design & code, it will only stay on design. It worked earlier but now will not, I am not aware I have clicked on antyhing to stop it working.

I just re-installed Dreamweaver in case anything had corrupted but still the same problem. Any idea if it is something I may have done?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.

Regards

Terry

can you zip up the file your trying to view and upload it?

Thanks for responding.

It will not let me view any of my existing sites in code either, not just the new files.

I am not a website designer, I have just created a few websites for myself never needing or viewing code before, the only reason I need to do it this time is I am thinking of purchasing a template from templatemonster & the free preview template download to see how you get on with it needs the text editing in Dreamweaver, the template is 22404 in templatemonster
http://www.templatehelp.com/preset/pr_preview.php?i=22404&pr_code=0o0b9E9fMBRB5ddf4RXX711ECQttlv

What I do not understand is when I first clicked on code it worked, I could see all the lines of text & edit them, all of a sudden for no apparent reason the switch from design to code or design & code just stopped working, this also applies to my other two sites I have created in Dreamweaver4.

Hello davidj

I have just deleted all the downloaded sample files and am going to try & download them again.

When I tried to access them through windows explorer all the files that had names before just had icons that looked like dreamweaver icons, also when I managed to open one of them in Dreamweaver it was just solid blocks of text with the leters PHP at the very start, I believe PHP is something to do with hosting but it means nothing to me and I do not think the PHP was at the start of the text when the code view worked.

If I can download it again I will post up some files.

Thanks very much for your help so far.

This file is called flash_flash/file_gallery

it is just a solid block of text in Dreamweaver with no separate lines or breaks, it means nothing to me. it also has php in front of the 1.jpg that stars the text

I have just found that as long as I click on index in Dreamweaver first, although it does not display the index page, just a blank icon in the middle of the page, when I open another file I can then switch to code view, however this is a once only click, if I go back to design it will then not go back to code for a second time, I have to close the file and open it again and then I get the once only click to code.

The problem I have as I have only ever created sites in design view all the technical stuff means nothing to me.

This isn't what you said but maybe…

If you're looking at a pure text file, Dreamweaver will always show code view since there's nothing to show in the Design view. So it won't allow you to switch to Design or Split in that case.

and one more thing, are ther any extensions on those file names (such as .html, .php, etc.)?

Hello DWcourse

Thanks for responding, I am really out of my depth here. I do not know why but code to design is now working again.

I only registered here today and have found people to be very helpful.

Also thanks to davidj

I will see if it keeps working, if not I may ask for some more help.

Regards

Terry
