I have a client who wants to send me some data files i.e xml file over a HTTPS connection.

What is the best method to do this and how would i do it? i.e FTP or is there any special software i would require.

sftp is the secure method of ftp

is this transfer a one off or is it part of a process

I had a client ask for this too we needed to transfer data like ssn and card numbers encrypted so obviously needed the SLL cert. I bought it from and used Godaddy to set it up (where this site happened to be hosted). They walked me through it. Hope that helps.

you can write a batch file to run the ftp command

by scheduling this via windows schedule (like CRON) this becomes automated

there are ftp automation software out there

or you could do some research and write your own
