IE displays alt tags for images as default. If you want your site to validate then you need alt tags so there is very little you can do about others viewing your site in IE...If it is just annoying you then check the settings in your IE.

If you're talking about the little tooltip with the contents of your alt attribute, just make an alt attribute that is empty - or_ add the title attribute which is the one supposed to be in a tooltip and add relevant information.

If you're talking about the custom little IE box that pops up, this will remove it:

Add this line into the header section of your HTML code:
<meta http-equiv="imagetoolbar" content="no">

thanks domedia! my issue is with the alt info showing. im not sure what you mean by "custom little IE box", but this seems to only happen in ie when the cursor stops over an image (i.e. when someone stops over the background, box pops up saying "background"). will give these a go and see which one solves it

I don't like those IE image toolboars, so that line is part of my own little HTML framework.

I'm removing a feature that the IE users expect so I'll probably reconsider here shortly.
