I have a design website and have managed to make most of it work. the final thing i am looking at is putting the actual photo content up. i have made the thumbnails and large images.

when i click on a thumbnail i was hoping to have it lanuch in a preset place in that page - is this only acheiveble with flash?

the only alternative i could find was to have the thumbnail launch a seperate window to show the full image....this isnt exactly the solution i waas after :S

ideas?

Javascript driven photo album. Might be just what you need.

Yes lightbox 2 is very cool but Flash offers even more options, including easy to manage loading in of images via XML.

Why don't you want to use Flash?

There's a good tutorial on this site for a flash gallery.

i would love to use flash, but have followed the most basic tutorials and im getting stuck with it. im going to go for this option for now, and then learn flash and update my site after getting it online.

<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/bw.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #1</a></div></td>
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/cabu.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #2</a></div></td>
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/casino.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #3</a></div></td>
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/elepe.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #4</a></div></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/manta.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #5</a></div></td>
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/motel.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #6</a></div></td>
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/stairway.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #7</a></div></td>
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/target.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]">image #8</a></div></td>

thats the code i have at present, which as you can tell is showing a hyperlink dubbed image #1 in each cell and loading the gallery when clicked, how would i need to edit this in order to have a thumbnail picture instead of the word image.

thumbnail would be /images/bwsmall.jpg for example

Just replace the text with a thumbnail image:
<td width="134"><div align="center"><a href="images/target.jpg" rel="lightbox[roadtrip]"><img src="mantaSmall.jpg"></a></div></td>
