Looks like you only did 1/3 of the tutorial.. The code in the tutorial works crossbrowser in all major and modern browsers. Even some old ones that are not used anymore.

i did the % liquid one, but my page in dreamweaver has a defined space, and when i view it in browser it has huge spaces to the right and left, then i did the last one, and it still has space to the right and left when i preview it.

This is not CSS:
.wrapper2 {
body {
text-align : center ;
min-width : 770px ;
}

Read the article again and pay attention to the BODY part :)

Do you want everything to line up to the edges of your browser, or do you want to set a certain width?

In your first post you said you wanted to control the width, which I assumed meant you wanted a certain width. A webpage will by default expand to available width if you do not set it.
Right now the code you have is set to make you wrapper 770px wide centered in the browser.

could my problem be that i am set to 1024 x 768 resolution on a widescreen monitor? when i set my resolution to 800x600 it fixes it.

ok here is a simpler example. i followed the last code in the tutorial. and in the IE preview, i get the text line, followed by a large space to the right, when i wanted the text centered in the page with no space. i cant figure out what i am doing wrong, i want the browser view to match the dreamweaver window view. and in the dreamweaver view, there is no large space to the right. i must be stupid. here is the code once again LOL. derek

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<style type="text/css">

.wrapper {
body {
text-align : center ;
min-width : 770px ;
}
div.wrapper {
width : 770px ;
text-align : left ;
margin-left : auto ;
margin-right : auto ;
position : relative ;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div class="wrapper">
gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg ggggggfffffffff
</div>
</body>
</html>

i just did thet liquid method at 10% with the same text centered, and there are spaces to the left and the right which i dont want.

If you want it how this site is done then remove all widths. It will adjust automatically.

silverglade

i removed all widths , it doesnt act like this site. i have tried everything, and all i get is the same thing. my text, with a large space to the right. when i did the 10% liquid, i got 2 spaces to the right and left instead of filling the browser page. with all methods, i either get space to the right, or to the right and left. the text does not fill the browser up like it does in dreamweaver.

here is the no widths code. it makes the text, and a large space to the right, and when i lessen the window, the text does not adjust. i dont know why. here is the code again.
i want the text to fill up my browser like it does in the dreamweaver window. the dreamweaver window is 750 pixels and i want its width to adjust to the browser window.
any help greatly appreciated. thanks. derek

Of course there is space to the right.. what else would be there? You have 0 *zero* content to fill it.

Anyone else want to chip in?

Hmm... same answer as last time.. The browser does not add anything. There not enough content to fill those sides. What do you want to go there? :)
I think part of the problem is that you conceptually do not understand how a web page works.

If you were to put this HTML code on the page, you would see that it would expend to your full browser width:
<p>On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains. thank you for that. good message too. there are no html line breaks in that text, and it does copy the view of dreamweaver exactly in the browser. but when i try to type something with line breaks in dreamweaver , the text does not fill the browser, there is a big white space to the right and the text is to the left wall.. so im not sure what to do now.
this is strange. but when i paste in your text it works fine. but when i put my own text in the exact same way, it leaves a space to the right of the browser. IM GOING INSANE. when

silverglade

actually, when i try to type ANYTHING the format you did to fill the browser, i get the space to the right in browser view. there must be something wrong with dreamweaver or my computer, or im nuts.
the only thing that works is when i cut and paste your code into mine. the only way i can get my text to fill the browser page is to type all the way to 1000pixels in dreamweaver.
even when i type under your text in a text editor the same width. and paste it into dreamweaver, your text goes to 750px, and my line goes to 1000

silverglade

i guess im going to have to work in the 1000 pixel width in dreamweaver, thats the only way my type works.

When you preview in dreamweaver does it line up to your browser's edges?

silverglade
03-02-2009, 12:08 PM
the preview in dreamweaver shows the pixel widths of your page, if you make a page in dreamweaver, and lets say, its not centered, it will go as far as you made it in the browser i think. but i suggest not depending on dreamweaver to write your html and css. i use it only for links sometimes, image maps, rollovers, and for its design view. but i code in code view. this is the best advice i got from a professional web designer, to write your css and html by hand in code view. then preview it in the design view and browser, also, what you see in dreamweaver will not always be what you see in the browser, in the end, it may look wrong in dreamweaver, but all that matters is the browser. also, i started learning to code css and html by going to w3schools.com, and learning their CSS and HTML sections. then asking questions (LOTS) in forums. I would put your page in a div called #wrapper, or #container, then put all of your page elements in further divs and use margin and padding to control their positioning. its just my opinion, but dreamweaver does a horrible job making pages, but it is good for some things like image maps and other widget type stuff. i use dreamweaver still, but just in code view previewing often in design view and browser. i hope this helps. also, i THINK what im saying is right, but if im wrong someone can correct me because im still a newbie. thanks. derek

Hi Derek

You have put that all brilliantly IMO. I think you have covered off a lot of the pitfalls that Noobs can fall into. Relying on design view, not handcoding, how to centre a page etc. Excellent post my friend and considering you haven't been doing it that long. There are others who have been here a lot longer and will not accept any of this. Nice one. :) :-D :mrgreen: (yes, that gets the 'three smiley seal of approval')

Make site wrapper. We have an article on it here: http://www.dreamweaverclub.com/css-center-content.php

What is the PHP equivalent of this please? Together with CSS?

Also, it states </div> is an undefined tag.

I started to suspect that when I saw HTML code in the PHP template late last night, but that's good to know.
