Okay so I have heard several different stabs at this debate. So it's time to clear the air.

First: when it come to the MAC vs. PC debate you will hear every opinion under the sun. But the overall truth to the matter is the following. Windows is built using and based around 30 year old technology called "BIOS" and MAC uses "EFI" which is the preferred system for Intel and AMD.

Second: Why is mac used as the main work horse in all major production houses. Stability that windows CAN'T offer that's why. Have you seen windows vista? Its a cheap carbon copy of OS X anyway. What most people don't get is make is a different hardware structure. It's not a legacy structure like windows.

Overall what is mac and how are they designed. MAC is made to compliment the production world using it's primary shell of LINUX Darwin. So for anyone to use Linux but criticize MAC is just dumb as it is Linux and Unix Combined.

The bottom line is if you are a serious production guru and need power and stability then Mac is the ticket. If your just a code writer and don't do things as Editing, Audio Engineering, 3D Animation or Cinematic Production then the low budget PC is just fine.

He's the overall best thing. If you do have a Mac you can insert a separate hard drive a with boot camp put windows on it and it works better then being on a regular PC. Why, better hardware structure. THAT'S WHY.

I use both, only use Windows 10% percent of the time though. But yes mac is the superior system.

Oh one more thing, the best rendering software in the world is render man. Guess who made that? PIXAR which is owned by who, Steve Jobs. I wonder what that was developed on. That's not a windows PC their using.

A Quote from DJ:

in 40 years i have... (Become A Grumpy Bugger)

had lovers (Men), girlfiends (Cross dressers) and wives (They All Left)

i have cut grass for the council (Like Forest Gump waiting for Jenny)

i have cut cable for the the rigs and made floppy disks for the Chinese (Boring)

i have sold pipe for B&Q (Just say no to Drugs)

and have Killed for the army ( Respect as I served as well )

I have seen my friends die though a bullet and a bomb ( Never A joking Matter )

I am lucky to be 40 ( That's Your Opinion)

and think of those who didn't make it even now ( I Do As Well )

I'm happy to be 40 ( That happens when getting old)

i am happy and greatful to be alive ( see you are old greatful is spelled "grateful" )

i have lived a full 40 years ( I think your older )

just a joke DJ

ANYWAYS!!!!

I prefer Metal Ray instead of Render Man, prob because I haven't had a chance to use Render Man though.

But I have had a chance to use OS X. Its a great OS, no doubt. I do like it, but when it comes down to me choosing an OS I will have to stick with Windows XP. Not because I think windows is better, but because it does what I need it to do.

Unreal Tournament 2004 will work on Mac OS X but of course the installation disk I have only will install for Windows and Linux .. Not sure how it can install on Linux and not OS X is beyond me.

I also like the idea of building my own PC instead of buying a OEM. Although I know that you can put OS X on a PC now, just never tried that yet. But then again I fall back onto games that I can play on Windows but can't play on OS X.

I use Linux about 5% of the time when I want to just totally goof off and do nothing (messing with the OS to see what I can install and what wont install) Most of the time, the games I use wont install 100%. Like my sound will not be working or some kind of graphical glitch.

I bet there is software like WINE for OS X like there is for Linux but I just don't see the point. I don't go surfing for porn so I don't have the virus problem that most people have with a window's box.

What really pisses me off is how they advertised Mac like it CAN'T get virus's. That is totally ignorant of Apple to say something like that. The only reason it didn't have a virus written up for it was because it wasn't mainstream. Why would a virus programmer code up a virus that is only going to touch 10% of the total computer users? He/She is gona write it up for the larger group population which would be windows.

Again, I'm not saying Windows is better, but for personal preference I will stick with Windows. If it wasn't for my gaming addiction I would jump to Linux. (I don't like the Mac OS X theme like most)

Anyways, that is my rant. I'm afraid to scroll up and proof read what I said so I'm just going to press the submit button now XD

Mental Ray is good but very limited especially when it comes to light and camera animation. Try Render Man you won't be sorry. What 3d Program are you using?

It used to be Maya point blank. But no so much anymore. It really depends on what your needs are and for which studio are you working with. I can tell you this, Now normally there are several programs use in one production. The last production we just wrapped up used three. So in my opinion it goes like this:

3D Software:

Maya: LOTR, Transformers,
Softimage XSI: The Hulk, Narnia, Happy Feet
Lightwave: Iron Man: The Dark Knight, Harry Potter
3D Studio Max: Star Wars, The Mummy, X-Men

But to be completely honest, all are professional grade and will accomplish the job. It is also not uncommon for a production studio to us multiple software depending on the project itself.

As for editing:

Avid Media Composer: Spider Man 3, The Dark Night, The Hulk
Auto Desk Smoke: Revenge of the Sith, King Kong,
Final Cut Pro: Happy Feet, LOTR, Harry Potter, 300

So really the best way to go is learn multiple. I personally am well versed in all of these and it has proven very profitable for me. Most of the people in the production world do get well versed in multiple software and rendering pipelines.

And to answer the other question I am 36.

It's funny how every single interpretation of mac and pc as person always portraits PC as a business/older type person, and the mac as a creative/younger person.

I'm 20 years old, thanks for asking. But I prefer to have a PC over a Mac because of the whole software thing as well.

I use Maya 6.5 still, I upgraded to 7.0 and saw the user interface was changed pretty badly after autodesk bought Maya. I can still use 7.0/8.0 if I wanted to but 6.5 works great with Unreal Ed 2.5 for Unreal Tournament 2004. I have Unreal Tournament 3, just haven't really started to edit that game to much besides the one map I made for it (my 6800GT can't run it to well).

I don't know how anyone can use lightwave ...
I've tried 3DS but that lasted all over 5 minutes.
Blender (free) I've seen people work wonders with it, but all it does is make me laugh if I try to use it.

Prob the reason why I never bothered leaving Mental Ray is because I don't do much with camera animations. I really just take a final render show of whatever model I am working on and leave it like that. I am not great with animations although I have made some funny things with it =D

One of my favorite things to do is going back to mac's website and view the pc vs mac commercials. Love how they portray mac and pc.

One of my all-time favorite anti-mac commercials however is this one, hehe

What the hell .... You have sideburns but you're a skin head ... Something is wrong there. I always thought people that did that were complete douche's. I wanted to just pull on their side burns for no reason at all!

haha :)
