this is my company site

http://www.drivebenfield.com/

it will give you some inspiration

it cost allot (lots of pixie dust happening at the back end!)

i suggest a CMS like Joomla

http://www.joomla.org/

ok im looking at the joomla site. looks a bit invloved for the guy. he just wants to have a page that he can log into and have a 'add photo' button and a list of drop, menus he can choose make modle colour engine size etc etc from.
then upload that info to the site.

then your requirement involves programming

PHP lends its self well to this but there are others

this bit is more complex than the Joomla option and the learning curve is steeper

Have you looked at Adobe Contribute?

Seems easy to get your head around, not open source though.

Lynda.com have some good tuts on it.

Don't know if it will do what you want but can't see why not.
