Alright if you haven't been following me and cary batting back and forth on the Learning CSS thread then I suggest you take a quick look at the site so far: http://dd.adesadesmoines.com/

In the news section I am debating on what to use exactly to do the news with. I think WordPress might work but I have never used it before and who knows, you guys might like something better.

I did plan on going with PHPBB forums and just post the news in a news section and link back to it for comments just to be easy on my self.

What would you guys recommend? Hopefully it uses CSS so I can morph it to go seamlessly into my site design.

a blog and a forum are 2 very different things :-)
Sounds like you want to use a blog like Wordpress. Easy to install and easy to skin, with a very active user base in case you run into problems.

Well I want forums so people can talk about anything and not just what is on the site. So if you look at it like that, Wordpress only covers the news on the active part of the site while you can still go to the forums to hang out. So if I chose to use wordpress I am still having forums anyways.

I was just wondering if it would be worth it to even install wordpress to do this or should I just link everything to the forums and merge it all into one there.

My goal is to have a username and login at the top that works off the database of the PHPBB forums, I don't know if wordpress uses a username login like I can do with phpbb.

In that case you should do a test install and get familiar with the software.
It has a famous 5 min install, super easy.

Yeah I saw that and I do plan on trying it but I was looking for some opinions, you know? One weather to use one or the other or both.

Got it installed pretty easy, http://dd.adesadesmoines.com/WP/

But now I'm a little confused. I figured it was possible to kind of embed it into my theme. From what I am looking at, it kind of remindes me of phpNuke where it has everything already there and you have to skin it.

Is there a way to kind of push it into my current theme?

Yes, there is a pretty nice templating system for Wordpress. There are some tutorials around on the net. I wold start with the wordpress site and look in their user/forum section.

I guess what I meant to say is, I don't want my site to be ran by wordpress, I only want that tiny news section to be wordpress. Think of it like frames, I guess. I only want it to exist there and only there. My goal is not to revolve around wordpress I think is what I should say .. ? lol hard to explain.

Is that possible or does wordpress have to be the central core of the site and then you have to design around it?

Your site wont be run by wordpress, only the news section. Just add your website code to their template system. They have a head include, a footer include etc.

Then you can include 'latest news headlines column/div' or whatever to you other pages.

but you have to get into the documentation and get used to the system.

Yeah, I just wanted to make sure it was something I wanted to do before having to redo everything.

And yeah, planned on looking at the docs if this is what I wanted it to do.

Thanks,

Ok I am listening but maybe I am not typing it correctly to show you I understand.

I was looking at some documentations a few minutes ago actually, saw some reports of spammers and anti spam measures which kind of scared me away a lil. Was looking at some customizing but still looking for the integration I want. Was checking out the CSS sheet too. Still early in the day =D

It's crappy, lots of errors, BUT ITS A START!!! http://dd.adesadesmoines.com/WP/

I got none of the images in the right folder as of right now but it looks like it understands where they belong. =D

And yes I am skinning this, Since the tutorial said to do that first to get a better understanding. I might end up just skinning it and using it to power everything, who knows, might work out in the end.......

Edit: Some images are working now =D

I'm looking at doing this as well...

Looks ok what you've done so far... I'd like to see it once you hyperlink your images etc. What errors do you think you have ?

Can you remove the side bar from the blog so that it doesn't scroll horizontally... ooh!, unless you stop the div scrolling horiz!?

Looks bang on to me so far.

I'm looking to replace the content and side bar with the blog so this should sort me out...

Cheers Dream... maybe we can get through this together...

Death Dream

The nav bar is linked but I don't have it linking to anything correctly. The problem I can't figure out is why html image tags do not show up but divs with a background image show up just fine.

As for the side bar in the news section, I was having some major problems trying to code that, everything I tired I would get an error one every line till I changed it back. I still want to have the side bar but not where it is defaulting it self to.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea if you got a messenger of some kind we can try that.

Alright, I've read several SEVERAL tutorials on how to skin Wordpress, and I think I am ready to start over from scratch and redesign this baby.

I really got to say, wordpress skinning doesn't seem all to hard to me now, kind of fun. Now, onto the real stuff.

I'll keep you guys updated, I installed wordpress on my computer instead of on the server so it hasn't been getting updated, so for the time being I will just post screenshots with my progress if anyone is interested.

Well the first links I listed worked pretty good, it was a good starting point but really didn't explain to well I think.

After that I just did some random googling and got to random sites and just read lil bits of info till I got comfortable.

I'll try to find the places I went to again, I didn't bookmark anything >.<

My concern is that, as I understand it, you hold the css & dw files local to the Wordpress files on the server...

Will you not have to update the header and footer sections on the main site and also paste it all into the Wordpress files if you update ?

domedia
05-15-2008, 01:31 PM
You can either use the wordpress header or footer for the rest of your website also, or you can keep them separate and update both. Not sure how big a problem it is though.. literally thousands of professional blog websites do either one, it's part of their website upkeep.

As far as I understand it, WP is broken down into parts, you got your header, main sections, sidebar, and your footer.

What I am doing is building my whole page in the index.php section, after I am done building it, I then cut the code up and put them in their respected files. So the header section goes into the header.php file and so on. Then in the index.php file you put <?php get_header(); ?> where the header code was once at before you cut it out.

Pretty much all you do is build your page like you normally would but instead of typing out your title you are placing php code there instead for it to figure out depending on what post you have.

I still have yet to figure out why <img src> tags do not work though. That is still kind of beyond me.

Correct, you do not have to have a header.php file if you don't want and just put everything into one main file. This gives you more flexibility one what you want to do each page a little different. I, however, will be using the header and footer php pages to keep them all the same so if one thing does change, I don't have to change it on every page, much like CSS code works.

Alright just found out how to get images to work properly if you guys ever run into the problem I did.

<img src="Image/image.jpg"> doesn't work and your image wont show up, so to fix this you need to add the domain name to your server: <img src="hoster.com/Images/image.jpg"> and your image will work.

a relative url is completely valid, you don't need to use the full path to your domain.

So you would think, but only background images work that way within WP I found out.

To get it to display when not set as a background I needed the full path with the domain name. I know it sounds odd but it works.

You just have to read up on the template system :)

If you're working on your template, use
<?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>
This will insert the URL of the template directory

If you're adding a background to the stylesheet, then the image is relative to the stylesheet location, so that should be easier.

Increase the font size while you're at it.. really hard to read.

Most of my site has the same font and crampy style, I dunno why I liked it and why I design around it but in the end I think I will stick with it lol. I may increase the spacing between the sentences to make it appear bigger and less cramped. Then increase the margin between each posted comment as well.

I'll mess with it more tomorrow. It's game time now!

I think you can 'get away' with smaller text when it's black on white.

Increased spacing between comments from 8px to 12px.

Didn't increase the padding within the comment though. Still think it needs it?

Edit: Just noticed that the Username Says: is a bit close to the top of the lip there, I'll add a 4px padding there too.

FYI: If anyone plans on using forums with their wordpress like I do (PHPBB) Here is a integration mod that I found not to long ago: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=544065

Looks good. From what I can see, it uses the Username info from PHPBB and integrates those users into wordpress for you to log in. So you don't have to have two sets of user names for the user.

Here is a demo of what I have so far: http://dd.adesadesmoines.com/WP2/

It's not real IE friendly at the moment, also I do not plan on allowing users to comment on my site without registering but since this is a demo I figured I would allow that. So just ignore the ugly bars above the comment box area.
