I want to be able to do editing on my web pages built by someone else. My website is www.uclaim.com (http://www.uclaim.com). When I try to open my homepage from withhin Dreamweaver 6.0, the attached default.asp, all the code shows up in Code view, but the Design view is missing stuff, including basic text like my "Our Mission" statement. Attached is a screen shot of what I get in Dreamweaver. My Web Developer just says "thats a strange problem you're facing". thanks much, ron

Hi David,
I don't know how to code in asp or how to set up an "asp environment" in dreamweaver. I assumed dreamweaver would configure itself when I open a file with a .asp extension, in this case, the default.asp, my homepage, and if I work in design view, dreamweaver would make the asp code changes.

All I know about coding asp is that when you start a New Document and choose Dynamic Page or Other in the Category, it gives a list of asp code types that I assume dreamweaver will create in code view as you work in design view?

I just want to be able to edit existing .asp pages.

thanks,
Ron

you cant just dive in like that

you need a web server (IIS is the windows one which comes with XP Pro)

you may have to install it from the windows disk

if you havnt coded asp before then your not going to be able to just open the page and add stuff. Your going to have to learn the subject first

this is not something you can just pickup over night

Check this place and you'll find a tutorial for almost everything you need to get ready for ASP. It helped me greatly when I started. There is one for setiing your server and one for connecting to the database and much more.

Thanks for the good info., but before I invest delve into a new venture, has anyone looked at the files I originally attached?

Let me just ask one simple question, why doesn't Dreamweaver design view show the html body text under "Our Mission" on my homepage www.uclaim.com (http://www.uclaim.com)? MS Frontpage shows it and Dreamweaver is supposed to be way better than Frontpage, right?

I attached my homepage "default.asp" to my original post. I think I made it a zip file.

Can somebody just try to open it with Dreamweaver and see if this text shows in design view.

thanks much

Hi jetskiron,

I opened your file in DW7 and your Mission Text was there okay in Design View.

Davidj is right though, you need to learn about ASP before try changing your pages.

Check out mangofreaks link and also you should find this helpful....

Thanks Paul,

Strange. I'm using Dreamweaver 6. I have tried to open the file on two different laptops and had the same problem.

How do I set up an "ASP environment in Dreamweaver" (as David previously suggested)?

Thanks much

Hi David,

The missing </table> was just above the bottom 3 scripts on the page, line 111 in code view.

Thanks so much. Now I can use the power of Dreamweaver!

Questions:

1. How did you know it was a missing </table> code?

The only clue that Dreamweaver gave me was a yellow "?" (and a note that there was incomplete code) in the properties section when I had the cursor on line 56 in the code view window. The missing code ended up going on line 111. I just found the location by looking for open and closed tags, and luck.

2. How is it that the page would view correctly in IE and browser preview and in Frontpage with this missing code?

thanks so much
Ron

pick one

I'm like cypher off the matrix... I see the code but can visualise the page in all its glory. I'm like a human browser!
or i am reading the Dreamweaver colour syntaxing and when an element of code changes to a colour I'm not expecting i know where the error is..

IE is more forgiving and it sort of knows what you intended to do and what you have missed and handles the code accordingly (this could be deemed as a bad thing)

Thanks much,

New question, currently I know how to open individual pages in my server directory and edit with Dreamweaver, but can't navigate with the links. Does Dreamweaver 6 have an "import" or copy feature for an entire website?
