HTML is the scaffolding of a site providing a canvas to build on

CSS controls the style of the site. Position of elements and colour of fonts etc

XML describes data and is a standard way to exchange data between applications

example
web app <- XML -> excel or word.

XHTML provides the extensibility of XML in an HTML document. This allows it to be parsed and interpreted by other applications not just web browsers.
